About The Artist
Wayne V. Hildreth is a sculptor whose work centers on the expressive power of the human face. After completing a 26-year career as a U.S. Navy officer and later as a renewable energy entrepreneur, Wayne returned to the discipline that has always grounded him: carving portraits that honor character, memory, and presence.
Working primarily in wood with a stone base, he approaches each bust as a study in individuality. the subtle tilt of a head, the quiet confidence in a jawline, the stories held in the eyes. His process is meticulous and deeply personal, shaped by decades of observation, craftsmanship, and a lifelong respect for the human form. Wayne’s studio practice blends traditional hand-carving techniques with a modern, transparent workflow.
Clients follow the evolution of their sculpture through daily progress photographs, allowing them to witness the transformation from raw wood to finished portrait. For Wayne, this shared journey is as meaningful as the final piece itself. Based in Jacksonville, Florida, he continues to build a body of work that celebrates the pe
Studio Philosophy
My Approach
character. My approach is rooted in patience, respect, and a belief that a sculpture should feel alive, not merely accurate. I work slowly and intentionally, allowing the wood to guide the rhythm of the carving. Each piece of hardwood carries its own grain, density, and temperament, and part of my craft is listening to what the material wants to become.
Within that dialogue, the likeness emerges: the tilt of a head, the softness around the eyes, the quiet strength in a jawline. Transparency is central to my process. Clients are invited into the studio experience through daily progress photographs, witnessing the transformation from raw block to finished portrait.
This shared journey builds trust and deepens the meaning of the final piece. Above all, my philosophy is simple: a portrait bust should honor the person it represents. It should capture not just features, but presence — the essence that makes someone unmistakably themselves. That is the standard I hold for every sculpture that leaves my hands.
